Bronx, NY – After last month’s Subway Series loss in Citifield, the Yankees were on a mission to win tonight. With the help of a clutch homer from Aaron Judge, and the combined work for Andrew Benintendi and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, the Yankees took the first game of this month’s Subway Series with a 4-2 win.
Yankees Off to a Red-Hot Start
DJ LeMahieu helped the Yankees get on the scoreboard first, getting himself out on a sacrifice fly to score Benintendi in the bottom of the first.
After being struck out repeatedly by Mets ace pitcher Max Scherzer in the previous Subway Series, Judge hit a solo homer off him in the bottom of the third to make it a two-run ballgame.
The Yankees kept going, learning that even chipping away can lead to a win. Benintendi doubled to right field, scoring Isiah Kiner-Falefa to make bring the lead to 3-0.
The Mets Strike Back! Not For Long
The Mets mounted a response with Daniel Vogelbach’s two-run rocket in the top of the seventh to tighten the gap real fast.
It didn’t stay that way for long, when Benintendi hit another RBI to score Kiner-Falefa in the bottom of the seventh, capping the scoring at 4-2.
The two New York teams face off again on Tuesday, August 23rd, in Yankee Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
