As many people struggled with the financial hardships of COVID-19, Yankees star infielder DJ LeMahieu decided to help out his old high school, Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, to navigate through the pandemic.
About DJ LeMahieu
LeMahieu has spent the last four years with the New York franchise, and prior to joining the Yankees, LeMahieu spent seven seasons with the Colorado Rockies, and one with the Chicago Cubs.
During his tenure with the Rockies, LeMahieu won Gold Glove Awards in 2014, 2017, and 2018, was named an All-Star in 2015 and 2017, and won the National League batting title in 2016.
With the Yankees, he was named a starter on the 2019 All-Star team and won the American League batting title in 2020, becoming the first player in the modern era to win a batting title in both the American and National leagues.
Helping Out His Former High School
LeMahieu is known for his quiet, calm demeanor on the field, who says very little, even as he’s ascended into one of the game’s best hitters.
Turns out he did the same when making a generous deal with his alma mater in 2020.
With the pandemic taking a hit on his high school, LeMahieu quietly purchased Brother Rice’s field in order to help them out financially.
Today, the Brother Rice baseball team leases the field from a nonprofit organization that LeMahieu is a part of.
Their rent payment? Just $1 dollar per year.
LeMahieu’s Motivation
As a professional baseball player, LeMahieu is driven by the pursuit of winning his first World Series. As a community member, however, he is driven by creating a “baseball heaven” for young baseball players in Michigan through his high school.
