Boston, Ma. – Offense-driven early-to-middle innings grace fans with a high-scoring game in Fenway Park as the Yankees won 12-5 in their second of four games against the Boston Red Sox.

Early Inning Rush to Score

Yankees were especially fast to score with Gleyber Torres’ RBI single to score DJ LeMahieu, taking an early lead in the top of the first inning. Josh Donaldson one-upped his teammate via his three-run homer, bringing the score to 4-0 with only one batter out so far in the inning. Answering right back just like last night’s game, Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez launched the ball to the wall for an RBI double, scoring Rob Refsnyder and J.D. Martinez to cut the deficit in half.

Even that was too much for New York, with Matt Carpenter’s RBI triple to send LeMahieu across the home plate for a 5-2 score. In the top of the third Joey Gallo’s at-bat yielded an RBI triple to score Aaron Hicks and Jose Trevino to give New York a five-run lead.

Top of the fourth, and what does Carpenter do on the second pitch he gets? He hits his ninth home run of the season, to bring the score to 8-2. Donaldson completes a double steal, third base and then home plate on an error to score the ninth run.

Stumbling On Two Fronts

Looking to avoid another loss at home, the Red Sox offense was eager as ever to continue scoring runs but were unable to do so in the bottom of the second inning, with runners left stranded on first and third. Meanwhile, Boston’s starting pitcher Connor Seabold could not keep the Yankee’s scoring to a minimum, throwing only one K after 2.2 innings pitched. To add insult to injury, Sox third baseman Christian Arroyo failed to spot the ball Joey Gallo hit, directly resulting in what gave the Yankees ample time to score. Still clawing away at the score, the Red Sox do their due diligence to get on base, but for the second inning in a row, a runner is left on base.

Coming Back to Life?

Trevor Story went after the first pitch he saw, sending it to the fans to trail behind the Yankees by six. Infielder Bobby Dalbec sent the ball way out of the park, bringing the score up to 9-4. The air in Fenway got tense when Vazquez was in the batter’s box, with the bases loaded and a full count, only for relieving pitcher Miguel Castro to strike him out, retiring the side and moving the game onto the fifth inning.

After that, the Sox had back-to-back 1-2-3 innings, looking to prevent the Yankees from scoring as the game dragged on. In contrast, Xander Bogaerts’ groundout gave way for Refsnyder to score 9-5 in the bottom of the sixth. The Sox fumbled again with bases loaded for the second time, only for Story’s at-bat to result in a pop-up, making him the third batter out at retiring the side.

Continued Victory in Late-Inning Runs

A sacrifice bunt from Gonzalez allowed Hicks to steal home in the seventh inning, giving them their 10th run.

In the eighth, Torres doubled on a flyball to send Isiah Kiner-Falefa across home plate to bring the score to 11-5.

Jackie Bradley Jr.’s substitution for Austin Davis inadvertently helped the Yankees. He walked Kiner-Falefa, and as the bases were loaded, he forced in one final run.

Looking to continue their stay in Boston with additional wins, the Yankees will meet the Red Sox again on Saturday, July 8. First pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:15 pm.
