Yankees Edge Out the Blue Jays to Take Mini-Series

Date:

BRONX, NY — After taking the night game against the Toronto Blue Jays (17-15), the New York Yankees (22-8) walked away with the day-game win in a 5-3 fashion. The win extends their win streak to three.

Things got off to an ugly start for the Yankees, as starter Jameson Taillon allowed the first three batters of the game to reach. Luckily, he minimized the damage as a Teoscar Hernandez sacrifice fly that scored George Springer was the only run they scored in the first.

Taillon settled in after a rocky first inning. After allowing a single, walk, and hit by a pitch in the one-run first, Taillon allowed just one other run on five hits over his remaining 4.1 innings.

He covered a total of 5.1 innings and received the win. Taillon now has three wins to start the season and is showcasing the potential the Yankees knew he had when they acquired him from the Pittsburgh Pirates back in 2021.

The offensive star of the day was Gleyber Torres. Torres accounted for all five of New York’s runs. A three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth gave the Yankees the lead.

His two-run single to center in the bottom of the sixth extended the Yankees’ lead to three.

On the day, Gleyber went two for three with a home run and five total RBI.

Strong Pitching Continues for Yanks

Following Taillon’s 5.1 innings of two-run ball, the Yankee relievers fired 3.2 innings of one-run ball in relief.

Michael King came in for Taillon and tossed an inning of scoreless baseball. Outside of a blowup against the Rangers back on May 8, King has been one of the Yankees’ best relievers.

In relief of King, Clay Holmes managed to induce a double-play to strand King’s runners. Holmes came back out for the eighth where he fired a scoreless inning.

Aroldis Chapman slammed the doors shut for his eighth save of the season. He fired a one-run ninth inning, allowing one run on one hit while striking out one. A sac fly by Springer to score Santiago Espinal was the lone damage they did in the ninth.

Overall, New York’s pitching staff has been phenomenal to start the year. They have allowed just 80 runs so far this season. The rotation has also posted a collective 2.75 ERA.

Taillon has been a big part of that and will look to continue his recent run of solid baseball against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, May 17.

Blue Jays in a Rut

Over the last seven days, the Blue Jays are hitting below .200. Although they were able to record nine hits on the day, it only resulted in three runs.

With the recent activation of Hernandez from the injured list following an oblique strain, the hope was that he could provide a spark.

That has not been the case so far, however, the Blue Jays still find themselves in third place in the AL East. With the bats they have in their lineup, they should get hot sooner rather than later.

On the pitching side of things, Jose Berrios continued his inconsistent start to the season. After allowing five runs on five hits over 5.1 innings, Berrios’ ERA now sits at 5.82 on the year.

Despite allowing a pair of Berrios’ inherited runners to score, the Blue Jays relievers managed to put together 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball, holding the Yankees to five runs.

After signing him to a long extension this past off-season, the hope is that Berrios can settle in and put this start to the season behind him. With the resume he has, that should not be difficult.

Coming Up Next

The New York Yankees open a four-game weekend series on Thursday, May 12 with the Chicago White Sox (15-14). They’ll travel to Chicago where the Yankees will look to continue their three-game win streak.

The Toronto Blue Jays follow an off day on Thursday with a three-game weekend series on Friday, May 13 against the Tampa Bay Rays (18-13). With the Rays having lost their last three in a row and the Blue Jays losing their last four, one of those streaks will look to come to an end.
