Philadelphia, PA- After the dust settled from the week three action in the National Football League, only one team remains undefeated in the National Football Conference, the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles are currently 3-0 heading into Week four of the season, after respective wins over the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Washington Commanders. For the first time in over four years, the Eagles are in the top three of ESPN’s power rankings.
At first glance, this team may not seem special. However, when looking closer at their explosive offense, it is clear that Philadelphia is a contender for the Super Bowl.
Captain of the Ship
Sail Boats and NFL teams are alike in the sense that they both require a captain. The Eagles have that in third-year Quarterback Jalen Hurts. The only difference is that under his command, Philadelphia has been more like a high-powered speed boat.
Hurts has put up monster numbers this season as he’s third in passing yards with 916. Hurts is also dominating the ground as his four rushing touchdowns place him in the top five of the NFL regardless of position.
Hurts and the Eagles currently rank first in offensive yards per game (447), and fifth in points per game (28.7). While Hurts is electrifying, he’s benefited from having talent around him on the offensive end.
11 Thunder
In many different cultures, seven and eleven are considered the two luckiest numbers. For NFL defensive backs seeing six and eleven together is a terrifying sight. First, let’s investigate the thunder of this wide receiver duo, the strength of the two number 11 AJ Brown.
Brown is one of the new editions to the Eagles’ wide receiver room, but he made his presence felt immediately. On opening day, Brown put the world on notice breaking the Eagles’ receiving yards debut record, finishing with 155 yards on 10 receptions.
Brown’s production is not limited to Detroit either. He’s continuously dominated defensive backs throughout this season as he currently ranks fourth in receiving yards in the NFL (309).
The strong receiver has been giving defensive problems all season thus far.
Six-Lightning
According to scientists, lightning is seen earlier, and thunder is heard later. The same can be said about the Eagles wide receiver duo as number six Devonta Smith was seen as an Eagle before AJ Brown.
Similar to lightning, when Smith is on the field, it’s quick, explosive, and sure to catch everyone in the area’s eye. Smith was the nation’s leading receiver two years ago at the collegiate level, becoming the first player at his position in over 30 years to win the Heisman.
Smith has found similar success in the NFL, breaking the Eagles’ rookie receiving yards last season (916). With Brown taking the defense’s focus off Smith, he is having a spectacular start to the year, ranking 11th in receiving yards in the NFL (249).
Smith has been playing the best football of his pro career this season, setting career highs in yards (156) and receptions (seven) in the Eagles’ 24-8 victory over the Washington Commanders.
However, the most impressive part of this performance was Smith did all of this by halftime.
Unsung Heroes
The most underrated aspects to finish up the offense is running back Miles Sanders, tight-end Dallas Goedert, and the entire offensive line.
Sanders currently ranks 11th in NFL rushing yards (222.) He’s also been able to find the end-zone this season.
Goedert ranks 3rd amongst tight ends in receiving yards (168) and has found the end-zone as well.
None of these stats would be possible without the Eagles’ offensive line protecting Hurts and Sanders in the backfield so that they can make these plays.
The Eagles will look to remain undefeated this Sunday at 10:00 a.m. PST when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars.
