BROOKLYN- The Alcorn State Braves (3-5) are looking to break a three-game losing streak against a tough Prairie View A&M Panthers (5-3) team on the road.
Will the Braves lose four in a row, or will they inch closer to a .500 record?
Braves Key To Success: Ball Movement
The Braves struggled to move the ball offensively in a 35-6 loss to Grambling State. Specifically, padding the ball.
Alcon State’s running game was solid with performances from Javonta Leatherwood and Jarveon Howard.
The duo combined for 154 rushing yards, and the Braves as a whole finished with 176 rushing yards.
However, Alcorn State only had 136 passing yards, and both Braves quarterbacks Tre Lawrence and Aaron Allen threw an interception.
A lot of that has to do with the pass protection from the offensive line to make Aaron Allen or Tre Lawrence comfortable.
“We got to make sure that we get movement up front, and we got to play on a consistent basis upfront in terms of what we do offensively,” said Braves coach Fred McNair.
However, it’s also important that the passing play calls for Alcorn State are done correctly.
There is no reason for a team to rush for over 100 yards and be stagnant when it comes to passing the ball.
This is especially true against a tough Panthers team that can take advantage of the Braves’ mistakes and score over 50 points on any given night.
Panthers Keys to Success: Defensive Pressure
The Panthers’ defense has to get pressure up front and immobilize the Braves’ offense.
PVAMU was able to score 58against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. However, what’s the point of scoring so many points when you only win by 10 points?
The Panthers can’t allow another 244 rushing yard game from their opponent, as well as allowing the opposition to throw for 306 yards and three touchdowns.
Some defensive pressure upfront can slow down the Braves’ offense or could possibly neutralize it.
PVAMU’s offense is capable of winning games alone with the help of running backs Jaden Stewart, Ahmad Antoine, and Trazon Connley.
The three running backs combined for 318 rushing yards.
Stewart had 140 rushing yards on 21 carries, Connley had 133 rushing yards on 24 carries, and Antoine had 45 yards on nine carries.
However, their defense should step up and prevent the Panthers from scoring over 20 points.
This can easily become a high-scoring game if the defense doesn’t show up to play.
Final Verdict
PVAMU will walk away with a blowout win over the Braves.
It will be hard for the Braves to keep up with a high-powered offense like the Panthers, especially when it comes to the three-headed monster in Stewart, Connley, and Antoine.
Expect the Panthers to jump to a 20 point lead in the first half and then slow down a little in the second half.
Final score: 32-13 Panthers.
PVAMU’s final home game will take place at Panther Stadium at Blackshear Field on November 4, 7:30 pm est.
