In New York, the atmosphere of the press conference and the energy surrounding the fight appears to live up to the hype. Some consider this fight one of the biggest matches in boxing history. Oftentimes in boxing, business tends to play a determining factor on if certain fighters or not. Rarely does the boxing world ever get to see two undefeated boxers in their prime compete; however Gervonta “Tank” Davis (28-0) and Ryan “King” Garcia (23-0) managed to reach an agreement fairly quickly.
“This fight is one of the cornerstones of our very ambitious 2023 boxing schedule,” Showtime Sports president Stephen Espinoza said, “It’s a battle between two of the youngest, most exciting, most popular, and in their athletic prime. If you put that together, then you have the biggest fight in 2023.”
Gervonta “Tank” Davis’ Tardiness Nearly Spoils the Press Conference
Although the press conference appeared to be vibrant and dynamic, initially, it didn’t start that way. Davis arrived at the press conference nearly two hours late. Naturally, this rubbed Garcia’s camp the wrong way along with the plethora of media also waiting upon his arrival. Later, Davis admitted it was unprofessional and apologized to reporters for his tardiness.
“Damn, just traffic and not being prepared, things like that,” Davis emphasized when asked about his tardiness.
In spite of Davis taking accountability for his tardiness, Garcia still didn’t appreciate it and questioned his character and integrity.
“It kind of shows him being unprofessional and kind of continues a pattern of his character and his integrity as a person and as a professional. That’s just how it is.”
Davis and Garcia Fight Predictions
Throughout the press conference, Davis and Garcia were extremely respectful of one another. Until Garcia was asked about what his predictions were of the fight by Showtime announcer Brian Custer. He predicted that he would knock out Davis in the second round. Quickly, Davis rebutted and attempted to mock Garcia.
“When I say things like second round, you asked me for a prediction, and I gave you one,’ Garcia said. “I’m gonna be ready for 12 [rounds].”
“So you were talking out the ass,” Davis rebutted, “He’s getting an ass-whooping.”
Factors Playing into the Upcoming Fight
On May 5th, Davis is due back in Baltimore’s court after pleading guilty to a hit-and-run charge from November 2020. According to reports, Davis was involved in a collision resulting in four people being injured. That said, Davis is fighting ahead of sentencing, ultimately ensuring the fight happens no matter what the outcome of the case is. This explains the quickness of the entire event and the even quicker camp for the fighters.
“This is quite quick,” Garcia explained. “We’re six weeks out, and this is our first press conference… I feel like it’s rushed, just maybe a little bit of his personal issues.”
Another factor that will heavily play into the fight is it’s been announced that there’s a 10lb hydration clause, which Garcia accidentally revealed during the press conference. The fight is 136 catchweight with a second weigh-in on fight day at 146 lbs, reported Michael Benson.
