CHICAGO –— The Detroit Lions (5-7) come from behind after being down 10 points in the fourth quarter beating the Chicago Bears (5-7) 34-30 giving Darrell Bevell his first win being an NFL head coach.
“My emotions right now, I can’t even think straight,” Bevell said. “I’m just trying to wrap my head around this whole thing on what just happened.”
Detroit’s Romeo Okwara strip-sacked Mitchell Trubisky with two minutes remaining allowing Adrian Peterson to score from the 5-yard line completing the comeback. The Lions trailed 30-20 early in the fourth quarter after an 11-yard touchdown from Trubisky to Cole Kmet, then Chicago’s Bilal Nichols intercepted a pass intended for Jesse James.
The Lions began to turn things around as trailed 30-27 with 2:18 remaining behind Staffords’ 25-yard pass to Marvin Jones Jr. Then, Trubsky would fumble on a third-down play at the Bears’ 17-yard line. John Penisini would recover as the Lions took over on the Chicago 7, setting up Peterson two plays later for his second touchdown and the game-winning score.
“Guys were having a blast,” Stafford said. “Obviously, it was a crazy one, down to the wire. The defense made some huge plays late in the game. We were able to put enough points on the board, come away with the win. Happy for (Bevell). Happy for our team. Just excited to get a win and thought it was fitting; he needed to get that game ball. It’s his first game as a head coach, and to get a win is huge.”
