Augusta, GA — Day two at Augusta National was a thriller. The high winds today brought a lot of high scores, but just like how it has been through this whole season, one golfer has emerged from the rest, Scottie Scheffler.
Scheffler Owns Amen Corner
Scheffler has become the hottest player on tour, winning three events in the past few months. Now he is leading the Masters by a significant five stroke margin. He sits at 8-under par through the first two rounds.
“I feel like my game is in a good spot… I’ve kept the cards pretty clean for the most part which is nice,” he said in his post-round interview.
Scheffler’s round started off a little bit bumpy, going bogey-birdie-bogey on the first three holes. However, it all started to come together on the par-4 seventh. This is where he carded two consecutive birdies. After this he did not look back. From holes 7-16 he was 6-under par.
Scheffler dominated amen corner, carding birdies on both 12 and 13.
Then after a birdie on the par-5 15th, he had a four stroke lead.
Lastly, he had a birdie on the famous par-3 16th to get the lead to where it is now. Scheffler has a commanding lead going into moving day. The last golfer to have a run like this was Jordan Spieth back in 2015 when he won five events, including the Masters and the U.S. Open.
Justin Thomas Fights Back
Justin Thomas commented on his feelings after his round one performance, “I think anger is an understatement… I was really really mad,”. Well, Thomas channeled this anger into an amazing round for round two. He shot one of the best rounds in the super tough conditions, shooting a 5-under 67 to get himself back into contention.
What really separated him from the rest today was holes 14-16, where he carded three straight birdies. His shot on 16 was the real highlight of his round.
Tiger Weathers The Storm
This would not be a Masters article without talking about Tiger Woods. Woods played great today given the conditions. In the end, he shot 2-over par putting him at 1-over on the week. With this being said, his streak of never missing the cut at the Masters stays alive.
However, Tiger did have to fight to make that cut-line. He was 4-over through five holes. The back is where it all came together for him. He recorded birdies on holes 10, 13, and 14. Even though he bogeyed holes 11 and 12, he was still able to grind it out.
“I got a chance going into the weekend,” Woods said after his round, “Tomorrow is going to be a tough day,”
Other Highlights
The best shot of the day came from the old-timer Stewart Cink, who made a hole in one on the par-3 16th hole.
Another big highlight was from Shane Lowry, who has not been able to stay off our TVs since he made a hole in one on the famous TPC Sawgrass 17th. Today, he holed out a chip on the 10th. The shot at first glance looked like a chunked flop shot, but ended up being perfect.
