The Pittsburgh Penguins held on to defeat the New Jersey Devils 6-4 on Friday night.
The Devils scored first. Miles Wood found the loose puck on the rebound and powered it in. The Devils controlled the puck, with Devils having 6 of the first 7 shots.
Fantastic save by Blackwood on a three-on-one. But it drew a too many men penalty on the Devils, and the Penguins capitalized.
Sidney Crosby shot from the blue line, and MacKenzie Blackwood stopped it, but Jared McCann scored on the rebound. Penguins have nine goals in the last seven games on the powerplay. Penguins went up 2-1 with a shot from Brian Dumoulin bounced off Janne Kuokkanen with only 47 seconds left in the period.
Jack Hughes scored in the open lane, tying the game.
Casey DeSmith and Blackwood played fantastic to keep the game tied.
DeSmith made a diving save across the net to shut down the Devils.
Penguins’ Colton Sceviour swatted the puck out of the air to bring the Penguins up 3-2 finishing the second period.
Wood was called for a penalty, resulting in a Penguins powerplay. Great shot by Bryan Rust, rung off the post and in. Penguins skated circles around the Devils, controlling the puck whenever they choose.
Crosby scored from a great behind-the-net pass from Jake Guentzel, 5-2.
Devils stayed alive with a Jesper Boqvist goal bouncing it off Kris Letang’s skate into his own goal.
Devils pulled their goalie with 3 minutes left, trying to bring it back to a tie. Great block by Hughes to stop the empty-net goal.
Devils refuse to quit, and Wood scored again, bouncing off DeSmith. The Devils were down by one with one minute left to go.
Bryan Rust scored to put the game away, 6-4 with 24.9 seconds left.
