Queens, N.Y. – The Philadelphia Phillies responded to the previous night’s no-hitter by picking up a 4-1 win against the New York Mets.
Kyle Gibson and Taijuan Walker dueled on the mound for the classic rivalry, and both pitchers had similar outings. Gibson pitched just over four innings and gave up only two hits, while Walker pitched five innings only giving up two hits as well.
Walker also was returning from a stint on the IL, which makes this an important return for the Mets.
This would become a battle of the bullpen like the last game, but the Phillies had the better night in this one.
Francisco Lindor put the Mets up on the board after grounding into a fielder’s choice to allow Nimmo to score, but that would be the only run the Mets put up.
The Phillies then got their bats hot, including Kyle Schwarber who hit a home run in the top of the seventh.
Philadelphia then added in another run including a Rhys Hoskins home run that added the game’s final run.
Bullpen Woes For The Mets
After a historic night that concluded with a no-hitter, The Mets did not get the same result from their bullpen.
Adam Ottavino came in and gave up three runs off two hits, and that was all the Phillies needed to win in this one.
On the Phillies’ side, the bullpen only allowed two hits in this game and stunted any offensive effort from the Mets.
The starting pitching for the Mets has been elite, but New York will have to figure out their bullpen if they want to continue to lead the NL East.
Phillies Bats Get Going, Mets Get Cold
The New York Mets were only able to put together four hits on the day, with two of them being off the bat of Mark Cahna.
The Phillies had six hits but two of those were the aforementioned home runs, which was important for this team.
Schwarber now holds a .169 batting average on the year, so for the power hitter to continue to improve his average with an important home run will give him some confidence.
What’s Next
These two teams will play one more time in this series where Zach Eflin and Max Scherzer will square off for the final game of the series. These two teams will also have a four-game series starting May 5.
