Olympics: Norway Closer to Official Victory, Sweden Dominates Curling

Date:

Norway inched closer to an official Olympic victory on Saturday morning despite not winning a single event on Friday. While the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) improved their medal count mightily, the Norwegians still hold a four-medal lead with just one day left of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Thus far, Norway has 35 medals, including a whopping 15 golds, the ROC has 31 medals with just six golds and Canada rounds out the top three with a distant 25 medals and five golds.

The United States sits behind Germany in 5th place, with 24 medals apiece. The Germans currently own the tiebreaker with an extra three gold medals, 11-8.

Going back to Day 18

The United States had a strong opening to their eighteenth day, taking home two medals in the men’s skiing halfpipe. Americans David Wise and Alex Ferriera won silver and bronze respectively, while New Zealander Nico Porteous won gold. In the other skiing event of the day (50km mass start) Alexsander Bolshunov of the ROC won gold while teammate Ivan Yakimushkin won silver.

Curling finished almost all of its competition with the men’s gold medal match and the women’s bronze medal match. Sweden won the men’s competition with a 5-4 win of Great Britain as well as the women’s competition with a win over Switzerland, 9-7.

Skating had three medal events Saturday morning. Bart Swings of Belgium won his nation’s second medal of the games, winning gold in the men’s mass start. Iren Schouten won her 3rd gold medal in Beijing with a win in the women’s mass start with American Mia Mangenello Kilburg finished just off the podium. Finally, China’s Winjing Sui and Cong Han won the pair’s free skate.

Germany continued their dominance on the ice track, winning medals in bobsled. Laura Nolte and Deborah Levi won gold for the Germans in the two-woman competition, while Mariama Jamanka and Alexandra Burghardt won silver. Americans Elana Mayers Taylor and Syliva Hoffman won the bronze.

Men’s hockey rounded out the day, as Slovakia beat Sweden in the bronze medal game 4-0.

Going to the nineteenth, and final, day

Curling finally comes to a close with the women’s gold medal match. Japan will face Great Britain at 8:05 p.m.

Bobsled has two runs of the four-man contest left. The third run will come at 8:30 p.m. with the final run at 10:20 p.m.

Finally, Finland plays Slovakia in the men’s gold medal game in hockey at 11:10 p.m.
