Norfolk State Spartans Complete The Sweep In The MEAC Men’s Cross Country Championship

BROOKLYN, NY Norfolk State won the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men’s cross country championship, with three of their athletes taking first, second, and third place.

Gidion Sigei led the way for the Spartans, at Delaware State’s Outreach and Research Center, by winning the individual gold with a run time of 24:38.8.

Regan Kimtai came in second place with a run time of 25:32.1. The 2021 individual champion Evans Cheruiyot came in third with a time of  25:41.1.

Howard Bison’s Adoade Adebiyi came in fourth place with a time of 25:58.1.

The sweep by the Spartans led to their third straight championship title and their 15th title overall.

Norfolk State’s coach Kenneth Giles was Outstanding Coach. And Sigei, who became MEAC’s fastest 8k runner this season, was named Outstanding player after winning gold.

Two other Spartans also finished top 10 in the championship. Brian Rotich came in sixth place (26:24.9), and Isa Suleiman came in ninth (26:48.2).

The five Spartans were named All-MEAC after finishing top 15 in the race.

NSU finished in first place with 21 points, Howard University came in second with 59 points, and Delaware State came in third with 90 points.

Norfolk State also had another standout this week. Mercyline Kimaiyo was named the MEAC’s Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week after leading MEAC with a 5k time of 18:05.2 at the Panorama Farms Invitational.
