Appalachian State and Norfolk State took to the court Thursday evening in an attempt to advance in the tournament. Both teams were placed at the 16th seed, now fighting to stay alive. It was a long and intense 40 minutes for both groups, but Norfolk pulled out a tight win with 10 seconds left.
Norfolk State got things started quickly, keeping a consistent gap between them and Appalachian State. Other than a mere 20 seconds, Norfolk State held the lead the entire half. Multiple three-point shots were made immediately, which expanded the lead even further. Nearing the end of the first half, Appalachian State began falling apart. They remained at 15 points for over 5 minutes while Norfolk more than doubled them in points.
Going into halftime, things were not looking good for Appalachian State. Their opponents led them with a 20-36 scoreboard, certainly making them look like the stronger team.
Things got interesting in the second half, however, and Appalachian State was able to pick up the pace from where they left off. While the difference in points stayed put for a bit, Norfolk got sloppy and started missing opportunities. This allowed Appalachian State to have a major comeback, inching their way closer to overtake Norfolk.
The closer the game got to ending, the tighter the score became. Spectators were on the edge of their seats to see who would be advancing next. With 3 minutes left in regulation play, there was only a 1-point difference. As the clock winded down, the score tied at 52-52, and Appalachian obtained the lead with just over a minute left.
However, the minute that remained was too long and would cost Appalachian State to be taken down at the last second. Justin Forrest committed a foul that gave Norfolk State two free throw opportunities. Now, with just 10 seconds left, Devante Carter stepped up in an attempt to complete both chances. Carter managed to send both through the basket, sending his team to the next round of play, ending the game at 54-53.
