NFC Championship Preview: Packers Will Try to Thwart an Opportunistic Buccaneers Defense

Date:

The Green Bay Packers (13- 3) are game planning to face another opportunistic defense on Sunday after coming off an impressive showing against the league’s top defense.

Green Bay Packers head coach speaks with the media ahead of the team’s matchup with the Buccaneers via Zoom on January 20, 2021.

“I think the Bucs’ defense is as balanced of a defense (there is),” said head coach Matt LaFleur, speaking to media via Zoom on Wednesday, “they have got stars on three levels, and they are very, very aggressive.”

He and quarterback Aaron Rodgers will attempt to avenge their loss in last year’s NFC Championship game. To do so, they will have to game plan for a defense coming in with a ton of confidence. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11-5) forced 4 turnovers against the Saints in the NFC Divisional round.

Meanwhile, the Buccaneers are trying to stay focused on the task at hand. With their home field, Raymond James Stadium, being prepared for the Super Bowl and a 38-10 Week 6 victory over the Packers on their minds, the Bucs are doing their best to keep their focus on the game this weekend.

“That was like Week (6) in October or whatever it was – that was a long time ago,” said Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David, “We’ve got to put that past us. They’ve got a lot of weapons back. It’s going to be a different ballgame.”

Brady vs. Rodgers; two quarterbacks used to the spotlight

The trip to the NFC Championship game has been a unique experience for Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady. Coming into the game against the Saints as underdogs, Brady had to rely on a stellar defensive output to reach the championship game.

However, it has also felt very familiar. Sunday, he will become the only quarterback to start a conference championship game in three different decades. He won 9 AFC Championships in his time in New England, so he will not be satisfied just reaching this point.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback Tom Brady answers media questions about his thoughts heading into their NFC championship game against the Green Bay Packers, via Zoom on January 20, 2021.

“I think we’re all excited for it, but certainly understand we have a lot of prep to go. We’re going to take every minute up to kickoff to get ready to go,” said Brady.

Rodgers is also no stranger to playing in league championships but has had less success than Brady. Sunday will be Rodgers’ 5th start in an NFC Championship game; Rodgers and the Packers have gone 1-4 in previous conference championships.

Keys to the game

Leading the NFL, the Packers have scored on the first drive 13 times this season, including the postseason. For Green Bay, a focus on gaining a lead and sustaining it will be critical to defeating the Buccaneers.

Head coach Matt LaFleur said his team is well aware of the Buccaneers’ ability to come back from double-digit deficits.

“We are fully aware of just how dangerous and how explosive this football team is,” said LaFleur.

To try to slow down the Packers, the Buccaneers will need a continuation of last week’s defensive effort. Rodgers and receiver Davante Adams have had dominant statistical seasons, and the Buccaneers will need to slow down the offense if they want any chance to win.

“It is difficult to beat the same team twice, so we know going in that we really have to prepare well, practice well (and) make sure we’re still studying these guys extremely well because they have a great offense,” said Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr.

Injuries to watch

Buccaneers receiver Antonio Brown is day-to-day, according to head coach Bruce Arians. He was listed as ‘Did not participate on the injury report.’

Check out the full injury report as of Wednesday, January 20.
