
Las Vegas, N.V. – T-Mobile arena played host to UFC 279 in a fight night filled with fantastic finishes. Nate Diaz submitted Tony Ferguson in the fourth round of their main event, whereas Khamzat Chimaev submitted Kevin Holland in the co-main (pictured above).
Welterweight: Nate Diaz Submitted Tony Ferguson in the Fourth Round.
The main event began, and both men traded quickly; Tony grabbed one of Nate’s kicks and forced a trip. Diaz arose, and both men continued to trade. Fergusons’ leg spurted blood out of a large cut as he circled around the cage.
The second opened, and both men threw low kicks as they targeted the calves. Tony slipped out of Diaz’s jab and landed a combination of his own. Nate landed a shot that cut Tony as he pressed Tony against the cage. Tony circled out and landed leg kicks until the bell sounded.
The third kicked off with a flurry of low kicks from Tony that damaged Nate’s legs. Both men continued to trade at the center of the cage as Nate pressed forward. Tony slammed leg kicks again as he targeted the shins until the bell rang.
The fourth began, and Tony continued to slam the leg kicks while Diaz jabbed up high. Both men pressed forward as Nate threw a flurry of jabs that pushed Ferguson back. Tony shot for a desperation takedown that landed him in Nate’s guard. Nate attempted a guillotine choke that Tony was forced to tap to; Nate Diaz was victorious by fourth-round submission.
Catchweight: Khamzat Chimaev Subbed Kevin Holland in the First Round
The co-main event kicked off quickly; Khamzat shot for a takedown immediately, and Holland scrambled and found himself on his back. Khamzat worked this position into a d’arce attempt that Holland was forced to tap. Chimaev secured the win via submission.
Catchweight: Daniel Rodriguez Secured the UD win Against Li Jingliang
The bout began, and both men traded early as Rodriguez applied pressure. Both men wavered as they felt each other out, as Rodriguez utilized his jab to keep Li at range. Li ate a massive hook that stumbled him, but he circled out of danger. Li tagged Rodriguez and stumbled him backward; he pressed forwards until the bell sounded.
The second kicked off; both men traded at the center of the cage as Li pounded leg kicks. The action slowed as both felt each other out as they both traded low kicks. Li landed a hard right hand that stumbled Rodriguez backward, and Li landed a takedown as the round closed out.
The third opened, and Li landed some heavy body shots as he pressed forward. Both men traded but stayed back out of caution. Rodriguez pressured forwards, but Li circled out of the danger, and nothing materialized as the final bell sounded. Daniel Rodriguez won via Unanimous Decision.
Catchweight: No. 4 Irene Aldana Secured a TKO Upkick Win Against 10. Macy Chaisson
The first round kicked off as both women traded leg kicks at the center of the cage. Chaisson shot for a takedown which Aldana foiled as they returned to their feet. Irene tagged Macy with a hard jab that wobbled her, but Macy shot for a defensive takedown. Irene reversed it into an armbar and cranked it hard. Macy held on until the bell, and both fighters separated.
The second began, and Macy came out firing as she landed jabs and combinations. Aldana grabbed onto a leg and shot for a leglock attempted, but Chaisson squeezed out of it. Aldana attempted a heel hook while in position, but Macy reversed the position to flatten Irene out. Macy proceeded to Irene’s back and reigned hammer fists down from behind. Chaisson fired a flurry of elbows upon Irene’s head until the horn sounded.
The final round kicked off, and Macy continued to apply pressure early. Macy landed a takedown to kick off the action and landed in Irene’s guard. Irene threw an upkick in desperation that crumpled Macy. Irene Aldana secured the victory via TKO in the third round.
Light-heavyweight: No. 13 Johnny Walker Secured First-round Submission Over Ion Cutelaba
The bout kicked off and both clinched early; Ion worked a trip into a takedown and proceeded to mount Walker against the cage. Cutebala over-extended and landed on the bottom but attempted a triangle. Walker escaped, snuck onto Ion’s back, and tried for a rear-naked choke. Cutelaba attempted to escape but was ultimately forced to tap to the choke. Walker secured the win by first-round submission.
