MVSU: Delta Devils Berthelot and McCarthy Named Student-Athletes of the Week

Mississippi Valley State has named volleyball’s Chardea Berthelot and soccer’s McKenzie McCarthy the MVSU student-athletes of the week. The pair of Devilettes played extremely well over the week, and while neither team came out on top, both seniors made their teams proud.

Chardea Berthelot

Chardea Berthelot is an MVSU senior and outside hitter from LaPlace, Louisiana. Berthelot came to Mississippi Valley State after graduating from East St. John high school. Berthelot has been an excellent addition to the MVSU volleyball team, gaining several notable achievements throughout her career. In 2018, the MVSU volleyball coaching staffed named Berthelot most improved. That year she was third on the team in kills with 108. She also tied for second on the team in blocks and aces. In 2019, she led the SWAC in aces per set with 0.36.

Berthelot was named the MVSU Player of the Week due to her highlight performances during the SWAC Round-Up. Berthelot set a new career high in digs against Alcorn with 15, as well as recording a season-high 3 service aces against Texas Southern. The MVSU Devilettes played in 3 matches during the SWAC Round-Up against Texas Southern, Alcorn and Southern University. In those 3 games, Berthelot led the Devilettes in kills, kills per set, aces and aces per set.

The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes’ next contest will take place on November 4 against the Jackson State Tigers at 6:00 pm.

McKenzie McCarthy

This is McKenzie McCarthy’s second straight week being named the MVSU Player of the Week. McCarthy is a senior goalkeeper out of Olive Branch, Mississippi. The Mississippi native has been excellent between the posts for the Devilettes soccer team.

McCarthy has been a Devilette for her entire college career, and she showed up on Senior Day for her final soccer match at MVSU. The MVSU Devilettes finished their season with a 0-0 tie against Alcorn. The team finished the year with a record of 0-12-2 with their ties coming against Alabama A&M and Alcorn.

McCarthy shut out the Alcorn Braves, making 8 saves against 25 shots faced. McCarty finished the season on a tear, with her second shutout in 3 games and the fourth in her career. McCarthy has a stellar career as a Devilette. She holds the program record for career saves, career saves per game, most saves in a single game and most saves per game in a single season. This season, the SWAC named her goalkeeper of the week 3 times.

This season has been a great one for the senior goalkeeper. McCarthy recorded 133 total saves in her senior season with a save percentage of 0.778. She allowed only 38 goals this season, a vast improvement from her 2021 season. McCarthy finished her college soccer career with 41 games played and 468 saves, an NCAA high among active players.
