MEXICO CITY — The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) hasn’t lost a soccer game to Mexico since September 2019. Mexico lost two tournament finals to the USMNT, both the 2021 CONCACAF Nations League and 2021 Gold Cup, in that time.
This time around, they drew 0-0 to the USMNT.
Mexico hosted the USMNT Thursday night at the famous Estadio Azteca in Mexico City to prove their own point as regional top dogs heading into the final days of 2022 World Qualifiers.
Mexico coach Tata Martino sent out a full strength squad , emboldened by Hirving Lozano, Raul Jimenez and Jesus “Tecatito” Corona up top. The United States seemed a tad anxious without starters Weston McKennie, Sergiño Dest, and goalkeeper Matt Turner, who are out due to injury.
The United States kicked off, but it was Mexico who started playing fast and furious, the home crowd behind them at every touch of the ball. Every time an American was on the ball, the Estadio Azteca jeered.
The nerves built with every touch as both teams defended their goal with resilience. No opportunity raced the hearts of the home fans than the American chance in the 32’ minute. Christian Pulisic found a through ball in Mexico’s box from the right flank by Timothy Weah. Pulisic shot and forced Mexican goalkeeper Memo Ochoa into a reflex save to what could have been the opening goal.
Halftime concluded with a nervous first half. By the start of the second half, we saw both sides play with more tension and less energy.
More frustration built and built, especially for Mexico. USMNT coach Greg Berhalter slowly sent more and more of their players to defend instead of hitting counter-attacks.
The game ended scoreless, leaving both teams in the same position they were before.
Canada lead the region of CONCACAF after their loss to Panama earlier in the night with 7-1-4. United States sit in second and Mexico in third, with the USMNT higher solely on goal difference. Both teams have two qualifiers left to secure their path to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar this winter.
United States will play against Panama on March 27 in Orlando, Fla before traveling to Costa Rica for their final qualifier on March 30.
Mexico will travel to Honduras for their away qualifier on March 27 and will return home to play El Salvador on March 30.
