Queens, N.Y. – A walk-off victory for the New York Mets in the second half of the Subway Series, completing a clean sweep of the New York Yankees with a narrow 3-2 win. Reliever pitcher Seth Lugo is credited with the win, and birthday boy Wandy Peralta gets the loss.
Mets Anxious to Get The Ball Rolling
Looking to sweep the series, Mets starting pitcher Max Scherzer gave the Yankees a 1-2-3 first inning with only six pitches thrown in the top of the first. Looking to avoid a sweep, Yankees’ starting pitcher Domingo Germán threw a 1-2-3 inning of his own, the whole inning lasting not more than 10 minutes. Scherzer repeated his results in the top of the second, not giving the audience any action.
Mets first baseman Pete Alonso added some spice to the game when he hit a home run to kick off the bottom of the second. It became a two-zip game with Francisco Lindor’s base hit to score Tomas Nido.
Airtight Middle Innings
Following the third inning, both pitchers kept batters at bay, proving that the crowd was in for a pitching duel. Although some base hits got past the pitchers, they kept putting up zeros on the scoreboard, from innings four to seven.
Late-Inning Revival
The Yankees capitalized on the Mets’ reliever Seth Lugo, with Gleyber Torres’ two-run homer to score Anthony Rizzo at the start of the eighth inning.
With the remainder of the eighth inning quiet, and Lugo’s shut down the rest of the Yankees’ offense in the top of the ninth, it gave the Mets ample room for one final push to come out on top.
Starling Marte singled to deep left field, scoring Eduardo Escobar who was comfortably positioned at third base to break to tie.
The Yankees look for redemption in their upcoming four-game series with the Kansas City Royals at Yankee Stadium, while the Mets look to continue their winning streak on the road against the Miami Marlins.
