Jared Goff Makes History in Win Over the Seahawks

Date:

The Detroit Lions hosted the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4 of the NFL season. This game was part of MNF doubleheader, with the Titans-Dolphins game also taking place.

The Lions looked to hand the Seahawks their first loss of the season, while the Seahawks looked to remain undefeated. Dan Campbell is also 0-3 against Seattle in his tenure as head coach, so a win was very much needed.

Game Recap

The Lions combined for a total of 36 points in their last two games. The defense has been great so far, but the offense has been shaky. But they have a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball, so it was only a matter of time before the offense had a big game.

Against the Seahawks, the Lions offense put up 42 points. After their first drive ended in a punt, they scored a touchdown on their next three drives. One of those touchdowns came after linebacker Jack Campbell forced a fumble, which was returned for 49 yards by Carlton Davis to set up great field position.

Seattle bounced back after the fumble and got in the endzone, which they converted for a touchdown to get on the board. They had a chance to put up more points on the board right before the half, but Jason Myers missed the 61-yard field goal attempt.

They got the ball to start the second half, and moved the ball down the field to get into Lions territory. A defensive pass interference call set the Seahawks up 1st and goal, and they converted for the TD.

The Lions got the ball, and immediately got into Seattle territory. They had several highlight plays through the second half. First was David Montgomery breaking several tackles to run for 40 yards. Then Goff threw a pass to wide receiver Tim Patrick that went for 23 yards to set up 1st and goal.

On 2nd and goal, Amon-Ra St.Brown got the ball off a handoff. He proceeded to throw the ball to Goff for seven yards that led to a touchdown. Ironically, Goff had yet to throw a TD pass but he received his first career receiving TD.

Seattle answered with a TD to cut into the lead. They attempted a two-point conversion, but it was unsuccessful. Detroit only ran one play on their next, a pass to Jameson Williams for a 70-yard touchdown. That was Goff’s first passing TD in the game.

The Seahawks once again answered with a touchdown after they got into Lions territory and Kenneth Walker ran 21 yards into the endzone. They decided to kick for the extra point, which was good by Meyers. The Lions next drive was short and ended with him having to punt after a loss of yardage.

Seattle would also have to punt after two offensive penalties pushed them out of field goal range. The Lions got the ball and got back in the endzone. Goff threw a pass to St. Brown for eight yards that led to the touchdown. The Seahawks got the ball back and knew that they needed to score a TD to make it a one possession game.

They got into Detroit territory, but there were some incomplete passes that kept them from moving any further. But two penalties against the defense plus an 11-yard gain by Geno Smith set them up 1st and goal.

The Seahawks would end up turning it over on downs after four straight incomplete passes. Two of the passes were nearly intercepted, and the fourth attempt almost caused a delay of game due to the ball being snapped right before the time clock expired.

Because Seattle turned it over on downs, the Lions took over at their own four-yard line. But they did not do much of anything as Seattle got a safety right before the two-minute warning after Goff took a sack in the endzone.

The Lions were forced to punt and they would set the Seahawks up at their own 30-yard line. An offensive holding call pushed the Seahawks to the 20-yard line. But it did not matter as Smith found his guy Metcalf for a 21-yard gain. Smith then ran 11 yards for another first down.

Two defensive penalties moved Seattle to Detroit’s 20-yard line. The Lions had a total of 12 penalties for 101 yards, with nine of them being called on the defense. This was the first time this season they allowed more than 20 points.

Despite the defensive penalties, the Seahawks would not put anymore points on the board as Smith’s pass was intercepted by Kerby Joseph in the endzone. The Lions pulled off the win 42-29, and broke the six-game losing streak against the Seahawks.

Jared Goff finished with 18/18 completions for 292 yards and three touchdowns (two passing and one receiving). He set the NFL record for the most pass attempts in a game without an incompletion.

Jahmyr Gibbs finished with 14 carries for 78 yards and two touchdowns. David Montgomery finished with 12 carries for 40 yards and a touchdown. Jameson Williams finished with two receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. Amon-Ra St. Brown finished with six receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown.

Geno Smith finished with 38 completions out 56 attempts for a career-high 395 yards along with one touchdown and one interception. He also had five carries for 38 yards. Kenneth Walker finished with 12 carries for 80 yards and three touchdowns. DK Metcalf finished with seven receptions for 108 yards.
