Im Sung-jae Takes the Lead After Day One in Augusta

Date:

Augusta, GA —The Master’s round one had a ton of headlines. The biggest not even being the leader.

Tiger Is Back

The biggest headline of the day was Tiger’s round on score at Augusta. Everyone had their eyes glued to their TVs to see the GOAT play for the first time in 17 months. To end up 1-under par in his first tournament round in over 500 days is a great start.

Overall it was an up and down day for Woods. On the back he had one birdie on the par-3 sixth hole and quickly followed it up by rolling in a bogey on the eighth.

His back nine was much better, but still nothing too flashy. He had a great two-putt birdie on the famous 13th hole, a bogey on hole 14, and lastly another birdie on the 16th.

In general Woods did a good job of playing his own game. He tried not to push himself to make sure his back and legs would last the rest of the tournament. At times it seemed like he was getting fatigued. Tomorrow will be the real test of him as it will get cold, and his back does not do well in lower temperatures.

Welcome Danny Willett

Danny Willett is a name that has not been said on tour for a while. Ever since he won the 2016 Masters we have not seen much of the Englishman. Could this be his week for a second time? His round started off a little bit bumpy, being at 1-over par through six holes. Then he went on to card a couple of birdies on both eight and nine. Then, like many. Other players took advantage of the par-5 13th and the par-5 15th hole. At one point early in the round, Willett even had a one stroke lead.

Cameron Smith and Scottie Scheffler Continue their Good Play

Probably the two hottest golfers on tour right now, Smith and Scheffler are staying hot. Both of them are currently in the top 10. Cam Smith is at 4-under tied for second and Scheffler is only one behind him at three. Scheffler could have just as easily been up there with Smith, but a bogey on the par-4 18th hole.

Im Sung-jae has amazing round and Takes The lead

Im Sung-jae surprised everyone by having an amazing five-under round. He was by far the hottest person on the course today. He started off by carding three straight birdies, and another on the par-4 seventh. It was clear early that he came to play.

The back nine is where things started slide a little bit for Sung-jae. He started off bogey, bogey. However, he quickly made up for it by getting an eagle in Amen Corner on the 13th hole . Then on the 15th, he took the lead with another birdie.

Dustin Johnson Goes for his second Green Jacket

Dustin Johnson won the masters just two years ago, in the special November COVID Masters. It looks like he is back to do it again. He currently sits tied for fourth place at 3-under par. Most of his scoring came from the front-nine, carding three birdies around the front nine. He could have easily been tied for second with Smith, however a bogey on the 18th hole changed that.

What’s Next

We get to see Woods again tomorrow. Hopefully, he stays on track and makes the cut once again at this amazing tournament, the Masters.
