NEW ORLEANS — Former NBA stars Manu Ginobili and Tim Hardaway are among this year’s Basketball Hall of Fame inductees. News of the 2022 honorees was announced April at the NCAA Final Four site in New Orleans.

Also honored were former WNBA champion and two-time college national champion Swin Cash; former NBA coach George Karl; long-time college coach Bob Huggins; WNBA champion and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Lindsay Whalen; and NCAA national championship coach and former WNBA Coach of the Year Marianne Stanley.

The class’s enshrinement into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, will take place on Sept. 10.

Qualifying Accolades

Ginobili spent his entire, 16-year career with the San Antonio Spurs. In his time with the organization, he was a key piece in four championship runs. The Argentine native also earned two All-Star appearances and a Sixth Man of the Year Award. Ginobili’s championships may have ended in the NBA, but that’s not where they began. His first professional title came in the EuroLeague in 2001.

Hardaway played 15 NBA seasons, earning five All-Star appearances in the 1990s. He was known for his “killer crossover,” a move he mastered and helped modernize the game with.

Huggins, commonly referred to as “Huggy Bear,” currently coaches at the University of West Virginia. The decorated coach is one of only six coaches to ever reach 900 or more career victories. In 2005, he earned Conference USA Coach of the Decade, upon various additional accolades throughout a coaching career that began in 1977.

Cash is only adding to her place in basketball eminence, as she’s already been elected to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. She currently works as an executive with the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans. Cash won two NCAA national titles with Connecticut and a WNBA title with Detroit in 15 professional seasons. Her contributions to the game further, as she was also an executive with the WNBA’s New York Liberty.

Karl played in the NBA for five seasons in San Antonio, preparing him for a 27-year coaching career. During this span, he won 1,175 games — enough to place him sixth all-time. In 2013, he was named NBA Coach of the Year.

Whalen enters the Hall as a five-time WNBA All-Star and four-time champion. She is now the head coach at the University of Minnesota, where she also played in college.

Stanley, who is currently a WNBA head coach with Indiana, has 45 years of coaching under her belt. This includes 22 years at the collegiate level with Old Dominion, Pennsylvania, Southern California, Stanford, and California. Most recently, she was named WNBA coach of the year in 2022, when she also was elected to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
