Sometimes in life, we all must make changes….and that’s what Gervonta Davis did.
After watching his star turning performance, (while headlining his first pay-per-view), I listened to what the new WBA super featherweight world champion, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis had to say afterward. And what I gathered was a young man, a week shy of his 26th birthday, that knew he needed to listen to his team in order to continue on his path to success. Under the astute guidance of his long-time trainer, Calvin Ford, and his promoter and all-time boxing great, Floyd ‘TBE’ Mayweather, Davis spoke as a man that understood the error of his ways.
From being too anxious in his fights, struggling to make weight, or not staying in fight shape, Davis is ready to take things 100% seriously. And the other champions and contenders better beware and take notice. During the g to course of the fight, Mayweather could be seen giving instructions from his ringside seat. Davis said Floyd was telling him to “stay calm and remember you’re a 12 round fighter”, instead of jumping in for the kill, Davis was patient for his time to truly strike.
Coach Ford said they had been training on placing the uppercut during camp. Davis used it to knockout Leo Santa Cruz in the sixth round, this past Saturday night. Some fans, media, and boxing pundits wondered aloud if Davis would even make weight or struggle to get to 130 pounds. He came in at 129.8 lbs. At the post-fight presser, Davis said he was going to move his camp base out to Las Vegas. A move that makes a lot of sense when most boxers choose to stay in their home environments, Davis is going to do what most don’t. He also said since he didn’t sustain too much damage, he intends on relaxing for a week and then plans on getting back to training.
I get it, boxing is a difficult sport, and the body and mind need time to recharge. But this shows he’s taken heed to the mantra that only Floyd Mayweather would express in his professional boxing career, ”Hard work and dedication”.
