WASHINGTON, D.C. – The New York Mets and Washington Nationals continued their three-game series Wednesday night in Washington, D.C., after the Mets started the series with a win.
In game two, the Nationals would prevail by taking the 8-3 win.
The action began in the top of the first inning as the leadoff batter, Brandon Nimmo, hit a double to left. The next batter would be Starling Marte, who bunted his way to get on base to move Nimmo to third. In that same play, a throwing era by Maikel Franco would bring Nimmo home for the first run of the night and Marte safe at first.
Pete Alonso would join the party as a home run to left field would bring in two more runs to make it 3-0. All in the first inning.
The Nationals would respond by having a productive first inning of their own. It all started with Juan Soto’s two-run home run, which got them on the board. With Nelson Cruz at third and Yadiel Hernández at second, a single to right by Keibert Ruiz would move the baserunners and tie the game at 3-3. Franco’s sacrifice fly would bring Hernández home for the one-run lead until Dee Strange-Gordon’s single would extend it by bringing Ruiz home to make it 5-3.
All. In. The. First. Inning.
The Nationals would continue to dominate in the second inning. With Megill struggling for the Mets, Cruz took advantage and hit a three-run homer to center to make it 8-3.
A Night To Forget
Megill made just his second start of the season in Washington. He pitched through five innings on Opening Day, allowing three hits and no runs for the win. On Wednesday night, it was the complete opposite. His night would end pitching 1 1/3 innings giving up eight runs. Wednesday’s performance would bump his ERA to 4.41.
