Arlington, TX 1 Arlington, TX. – Perhaps the rumors of his demise were greatly exaggerated. And Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence Jr. went out of his way to show the world the truth. That despite surviving a terrible car accident that left him out of the ring, he is still one of boxing’s top pound-for-pound stars. He proved that tonight, retaining his WBC and IBF welterweight titles, with his unanimous decision victory over Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia. Spence (27-0, 21 KOs) controlled most of the rounds using an effective jab and landing heavy blows to the body of Garcia (36-3, 21 KOs). Compubox had Spence landing 187 of 707 punches thrown, while Garcia landed 117 of 700 total.
Taking in his win afterward, Spence was reflective and appreciative of the moment. “The moment is surreal. Coming back from the accident, I feel like I looked pretty good tonight.”, he said. The judges thought he looked pretty good, too, scoring the bout 116-112 twice and 117-111. Garcia admitted that he had trouble with Spence’s jab, “His jab was rangy and threw my timing off a bit. That was the key to the fight.” He also admitted that the jab was better than he expected. As for Spence, he has options for who he could fight next (Terence Crawford, Manny Pacquaio, or a rematch with Shawn Porter), but he remains noncommittal for what’s next up for him, saying he’ll discuss things with his manager, Al Haymon in the next couple of weeks. But make no doubt about how he feels his stature is amongst his peers at the 147 lb. weight class, “I proved to everyone that I’m the best 147-pound fighter in the world.”
