After top-10 finishes the last four years and being 2019 runner-up, Dustin Johnson is finally a Masters champion.
On the 18th hole, Johnson tapped in for par with a 4-under 68, finishing 20-under 268, breaking the record by two shots matching Jordan Spieth in 2015.
Setting a tournament scoring record with 20 under, the green jacket was finally put on his shoulders. The 36-year-old had no doubt he’d play in the Masters after missing two tournaments due to testing positive for COVID-19. He spoke about playing earlier this month during an interview for a pre-tournament at the Vivint Houston Open.
“The only good thing that came out of this is I know I’m playing next week at the Masters,”
Johnson played well, making only two bogeys in his first 57 holes of the tournament. He found himself standing on the sixth tee box Sunday morning at Augusta National, having carded back -to -back bogeys Johnson tees off with his 8-iron landing his ball 7 feet from the hole he smoothly putts for his second birdie in the final round, giving him a three-shot lead over Australia’s Cameron Smith.
Johnson took to Twitter after his stellar performance saying,” A dream come true. I’ll remember this at the Masters for the rest of my life. ” He now has an all-time résumé in golf history.
