On Saturday, November 5, WBA Super Middleweight Champion David Morrell Jr. will take on Aidos Yerbossynuly at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The pair of unbeaten fighters will square off in a battle for the WBA Super Middleweight title, but there is much more at stake in this bout. Both men are fighting for a shot at the big names in their weight division, David Benavidez and Canelo Alvarez, and they are fighting for the pride of their heritage.
A Battle That Spans Generations
Both Morrell and Yerbossynuly are very proud of their heritage, and both see this battle as a way to show off their culture. Aidos Yerbossynuly is a pound man of Kazakhstan. He has leaned a lot on his heritage and the strength of his people as motivation for this fight in his opponent’s hometown. “We are descendants of Nomadic warriors,” Yerbossynuly said. “We’re not scared of any challenges. We want the belt and it doesn’t matter if we’re in his hometown. It’s the way of the warrior.”
As Aidos Yerbossynuly said, this fight is in David Morrell Jr.’s hometown of Minneapolis. He has fought in The Armory in Minneapolis four times already, and there is no doubt that The Armory will be rocking for their hometown kid. “Aidos is going to see how loud The Armory can be on November 5,” Morrell said. “I’m going to be ready for whatever comes my way in this fight.” But Morrel has more than just his hometown to fight for. Morrell is a proud Cuban, a people with a rich history of boxing. However, perhaps the biggest reason he seeks a big win is that November 5 is his mother’s birthday.

The pair of fighters exchanged friendly banter over their heritage during their press conference. Yerbossynuly acknowledged and respected the rich history of Cuban boxing, but also told Morrell that the Cubans learned boxing from the Soviets. Morrell responded to this saying, “You guys are going to see what you think you taught us.” This is a battle between two very proud men with deep cultural backgrounds in boxing. The pride and the grit Morrell and Yerbossynuly displayed at their press conference will make for a great and passionate fight on November 5 in Minneapolis.

The Stakes of the Fight
Morrell and Yerbossynuly are coming into The Armory with undefeated records. David Morrell Jr. arrives with a record of 7-0 with 6 knockouts, and Aidos Yerbossynuly is 16-0 with 11 knockouts. So, no matter who wins on November 5, someone is going to leave Minneapolis with a loss.
On top of their records, this fight is for the WBA Super Middleweight Championship, and the winner will have some massive opportunities. While both Morrell and Yerbossynuly stated that they are not looking past each other, both men have aspirations of facing the top boxers in the division. Morrell has been very vocal about wanting a fight with two-time WBC Super Middleweight champion David Benavidez, and both fighters are chomping at the bit to take on once undisputed Super Middleweight Champion Canel Alverez.
Both men possess solid power and are looking for a statement finish. Morrell is a 24-year-old Cuban southpaw looking to prove himself, while Yerbossynuly is a 30-year-old veteran looking for a chance to make a push toward the top of the Super Middleweight division. Neither fighter is going to roll over, and everything points to this being a barn burner of a contest. Both fighters in their final comments promised fireworks as Yerbossynuly stated, “The plan is to stop him, and we will make this plan happen.” Morrell responded, “My plan is to teach you a lesson based on what you taught me.”
