Dallas, TX– The Dallas Stars beat the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime 4-3 on Monday.
With the win, the Stars move into 4th place in the Discover Central division with 54 points. The Hurricanes are leading the division with 69 points, the second-most in the NHL
Captain Jamie Benn led the way for the Stars, notching all four points and the game-winning goal in overtime.
In the first period, the Stars struck fast. After a penalty on the Hurricanes 16 seconds in, Joe Pavelski scored on the rebound, flipping it over James Reimer. After this goal, the Hurricanes started to heat up, getting some good chances. Dallas scored again on a weird redirect in front of the net with three minutes left in the period. Esa Lindell snapped the shot quickly and it glances off the leg of Jason Dickinson and in.
Carolina started the second period aggressively, spending the first two minutes in the offensive zone. They had some great shots, but Jake Oettinger stayed strong and did not allow Carolina to come back. Carolina could not buy a goal for the first and half of the second period, with the puck bouncing on easy shots. Finally, 14 minutes into the second period, Carolina broke past Oettinger. Carolina scored on a fantastic play by Max McCormick, batting the puck into the net right as it bounced in the air.
The Hurricanes scored three minutes later to tie the game. Jaccob Slavin wound around the offensive zone and snapped a shot past Oettinger. Less than 30 seconds later, the Stars scored on a one-timer missile from Denis Gurianov to retake the lead. Stars got great chances, but Reimer did his best to stop them. At the end of the second period, the Stars were up 3-2.
After an uneventful first ten minutes, Carolina started to get established. Oettinger did his best, but eventually wore down, and Hurricanes scored with only four minutes left to tie the game. Jani Hakanpaa slapped one past Oettinger to take the game to overtime.
After two minutes in overtime, Jason Robertson and Benn ended the game. Robertson stole the puck in the defensive zone, chased up the ice, and found Benn, who slid it past Reimer. Benn contributed to all four goals and now has two overtime winners in the last two games.
Earning one point from going to overtime, the Hurricanes clinched a playoff spot. Tomorrow’s matchup is the last game between these two teams for the season.
