MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. —— The Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes had to overcome some adversity early on as Mahomes threw three interceptions and took a 30-yard sack before getting the offense back on track to defeat the Miami Dolphins 33-27, clinching their fifth consecutive AFC West title.
Mahomes took the longest sack of his NFL career, threw three interceptions but turned things around as he threw for 393 yards and two touchdowns to help the Chiefs (12-1) pick up their eighth straight win.
Glad to get the win and get out of here,” coach Andy Reid said. “That’s a good football team.” question
The Dolphins (8-5) find themselves fighting to maintain the current seventh seed in the AFC.
This is an explosive team, and they went on a run there,” Dolphins coach Brian Flores said. “It was a quick spurt. That’s how they’re built; they go on runs. They went on one there. We collected ourselves, and I thought our guys did a good job of that. We played with poise and got ourselves back in the game.”
Tua Tagovailoa passed for 316 yards and three touchdowns, two scores to Mike Gesicki, one on the ground, and one interception. He cut the lead down to six points with 4:25 left, leading scoring drives of 80 and 75 yards before Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker drilled a 46-yard field goal with one minute remaining.
Among Mahomes, two scores were to Travis Kelce, who had eight catches for 136 yards, and Tyreek Hill, three catches for 79 yards. He was also throwing interceptions to three different Dolphins’ players.
“We won the Super Bowl here and just clinched the AFC West — it seems every time we leave this stadium, we have a hat about something we accomplished,” Mahomes said. “The (bad) part, it seems, is like I have half my interceptions at this stadium.”
