Edmonton, Alberta– The Vancouver Canucks smashed the Edmonton Oilers 6-3 on Thursday night.
After allowing a 4-goal first period, the Oilers could not make a comeback.
The Canucks broke Mikko Koskinen in the first period, scoring 4 goals on their first 4 shots. Koskinen was pulled after the fourth goal, and Mike Smith finished the game.
The shots were finding their way into the net for the Canucks, with two goals bouncing off the goalie from weird angles.
Thirty-one seconds in, the Canucks broke the ice. Nils Hoglander found the opening in the defense and snapped home a goal to the glove side.
Within five minutes, the Canucks forced a turnover in their offensive zone, and Jack Rathbone collected a blocked shot and bounced it in off the post.
Travis Hamonic then slapped one home, bouncing off the shoulder of Koskinen.
Jacye Hawryluk collected another rebound past Koskinen, ending the quick night for Koskinen.
The Oilers tried to bounce back in the first period, bringing life back to their stadium.
Leon Draisaitl put a stop to the run, wristing one past Thatcher Demko to bring it 4-1.
The Oilers scored again, Jesse Puljujarvi on a one-timer to give the Oilers life.
In the second period, Tyler Graovac scored on a weird angle to beat Mike Smith, barely snapping it in to make it 5-2.
Draisaitl scored again in the third period, but it was too little too late. Brock Boeser scored to salt the game away, and the Canucks escaped Edmonton with the win.
Vancouver is solidly in last place in the Scotia North Division, with only 43 points. Edmonton is 2nd in the division with 66 points and has clinched a playoff spot.
The Canucks only have eight games left in their disappointing season, playing the Oilers twice more.
The Oilers only have four games left, but each game matters for seeding in the playoffs.
