Canelo Dominates Smith and Becomes Super Middleweight Unified Champ

Date:

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS ——Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez showed those in attendance at the Alamodome and the rest of the world why he’s considered the best pound for pound in boxing, with his complete domination of Callum Smith. The judges certainly saw things that way, scoring it 119-109 twice and 117-111. With the victory, Alvarez becomes the WBA, WBC, and Ring champion. Canelo (54-1-2, 36 KOs) was able to control the fight by cutting off the ring and walking Smith down, delivering an array of hooks and uppercuts. Smith had absolutely no answers for Canelo and couldn’t land anything of consequence on him. Canelo was able to land a whopping 57% of his power punches and was able able to hand Smith (27-1, 19 KOs) his first career loss.

After the match, Smith was contemplating a move up to light heavyweight. As for Canelo, he has a load of options to take on next. He could go back down to middleweight and fight IBF champion Gennadiy Golovkin or stay at super middleweight and challenge belt holders Billy Joe Saunders (WBO champion) or Caleb Plant (IBF champion).
