Boston, Ma. – The Boston Red Sox split the series with the New York Yankees in an 11-6 win in Fenway Park on Sunday, July 10. Although the Yankees started out strong, showing their teeth early on, it simply wasn’t enough to sweep the series.
Two-Run Home Run Game
Yankee bats got off to a hot start with Giancarlo Stanton’s laser shot two-run homer in the top of the first, scoring Aaron Judge, to open the ballgame with a 2-0 lead. They doubled their lead in the top of the second with Jose Trevino singled on a sharp line drive to score Matt Carpenter, followed by Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s RBI single to bring in Aaron Hicks.
The Red Sox used to the bottom of the second inning to cut the lead in half by a two-run home by Franchy Cordero to score Trevor Story.
Carpenter continues to terrorize Fenway Park with the third two-run homer of the day, bringing in Anthony Rizzo to make it a 6-2 game in just three innings.
Back to Your Regularly Scheduled Game
Christian Vazquez shot a solo home run in the bottom of the third in response to New York’s offense to bring the score up to 6-3. He followed up with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to send Jackie Bradley Jr. across the home plate for another run scored.
The Red Sox came from behind with yet another two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning from J.D. Martinez, scoring Vazquez from the previous at-bat, tying the game at six.
Late Inning Comeback
The bottom of the sixth inning was the perfect storm for the Red Sox, as bases were loaded before any player was retired. Jeter Downs singled to let Story score for the second time this evening, Boston taking the lead 7-6. That is all the Yankees defense would let the Red Sox do, as they finished the inning with two runners stranded.
Boston did not leave anything to chance in the bottom of the seventh inning, where they had another bases loaded opportunity. Story doubled to center field to score Martinez, Xander Bogaerts and Alex Verdugo all within 10 seconds. Cordero contributed a sacrifice bunt to get himself to first base, giving ample time for Story to cross the home plate again, bringing the score up to 11-6.
