Los Angeles, CA– The St. Louis Blues beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 on Monday night.
While the win does not affect the Blues’ playoff standings, it was an important game to stay sharp for the playoffs. Blues are firmly the 4th seed, Kings are way out of the playoffs, at 48 points.
The first two periods were uneventful. At the end of the first period, the Kings only had 6 shots, and the Blues had 5. Cal Petersen and Jordan Bennington were up to the test and turned away any shot they faced.
Finally, a minute into the third period, the Blues break through. Jaden Schwartz dropped a backhand pass to Tyler Bozak, who went backhand to beat Petersen.
Six minutes later, the Kings tie it. Alex Iafallo slapped one home off the post past Bennington.
With 2 penalties in the last 5 minutes, both teams had a chance to take the lead late but could not beat the goaltenders. The game went to overtime, but the Blues did not wait long to win.
Forty-six seconds into overtime, David Perron and Justin Faulk got a 2-on-1. Perron passed it to Faulk, who snapped it through Petersen’s legs to end the game.
The Blues only have 2 games left, both against the Minnesota Wild. The Kings face the Colorado Avalanche for their last 2 games.
Playoff Implications
The Blues are sitting firmly in 4th place in the West Division, but do not know who they face. The Vegas Golden Knights and Colorado Avalanche are still battling for the division title. The Golden Knights must win just one more game to clinch the division, and face the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday.
The Blues will face the top seed in the division, which will most likely be the Golden Knights. The Blues have a 15-9-4 record on the road, which is promising for the Blues to go deep in the playoffs. As the 4th seed, the Blues will be the lower seed for most of the possible matchups.
