HOCKEY CULTURE SEASON TWO

Season Two of Hockey Culture debuted an interview with Hockey Hall of Famer Willie O’Ree yesterday. NBC Sports NHL analyst Anson Carter spoke with the hockey icon and discussed his historic career, how he remains involved with the NHL and other mentorship programs, and the intersection between race and politics in modern-day America.

The conversation is available now on Hockey Culture’s dedicated YouTube Channel and below are highlights:

O’Ree on racism he experiences in his life: “I still have racial slurs and remarks directed towards me from time to time…they just look at me like a black man. The one thing I’ve learned, when I get up in the morning and look in the mirror, I don’t see a black man or a brown man, just a man.”

O’Ree on breaking the color barrier in the NHL during his debut on Jan. 18, 1958: “I didn’t realize that I had broke the color barrier and opened the door for others, not just black players, but players of color…I read about it in the newspaper…I didn’t get any goals, assists or get in any fights, but we beat the Canadiens 3-0. Shut them out at the Montreal Forum on a Saturday night. That was a feat in itself!”

O’Ree on his work with mentorships programs around the sport of hockey: “Working with young kids, they keep you feeling and thinking young. If you can put a smile on a young boy or girls face, there’s not enough money in the world that can take that place, to make a boy or girl happy.”
