Fresh off unifying the IBF and WBC welterweight world titles last September, in his victory over ‘Showtime’ Shawn Porter, Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence Jr. was riding high. However, two weeks later, on October 10th, he would be in the hospital from being ejected from his Ferrari as the car flipped multiple times. People wondered if the accident was severe enough to end his career or, even worse, cost him his life. He survived the accident with minimal injuries and a deeper appreciation for his life, family, and career. With a renewed focus, he told Sports Illustrated, “Now I have a second chance. I won’t take it for granted.”
Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia knows a little something about second chances. He was a unified and lineal champion at super lightweight then moved up to welterweight and won the vacant WBC championship against Robert ‘Ghost’ Guerrero in 2016. The next year, he put his new title on the line against the WBA Super champion Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman. He lost his title by a highly debatable split decision. Garcia attempted to get his title back but came up short against Shawn Porter (ironically, Porter ended up losing the title to Spence). But this is Danny’s second chance at not only winning the WBC title back but also becoming the unified champion at welterweight.
“There’s no feeling like winning and winning a world title is the best feeling in the world,” he said at the pre-fight press conference. “I’ve taken it for granted before, but in this world, you learn off of your mistakes and become a better man.”
