NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 2020 TransPerfect Music City Bowl game, which was slated to take place on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at Nissan Stadium between the Missouri Tigers and the Iowa Hawkeyes has been cancelled.
Music City Bowl officials received word today that the Missouri Tigers would be unable to participate in the 2020 bowl game due to an increase in positive COVID-19 tests among its student-athletes, coaches, and staff and after consultation with local and state health departments.
“I want to thank the hard work of those involved in helping plan this year’s bowl, which we were prepared to host this week,” Scott Ramsey, President & CEO of the TransPerfect Music City Bowl said. “Unfortunately, Missouri’s high positive COVID-19 numbers have resulted in the cancelation of this game. We look forward to planning for 2021.”
The head coaches from both teams also commented on the cancellation:
“I am disappointed that we were not able to finish the season against a tremendous opponent in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl later this week,” Missouri first-year coach Eli Drinkwitz said in a school release. “I am extremely proud of the fight and resiliency that our players have shown throughout this challenging season.”
“We are extremely disappointed to have our season end today,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement released by the school. “This is a remarkable group of players and men, and it has been an honor to coach them.”
The bowl which was allowing for fans to attend is automatically refunding all purchases through Ticketmaster. According to a release from the TransPerfect Music City Bowl, ticketholders should expect to receive their refund in the next 7-10 business days.
The Music City Bowl is the 17th bowl game to be cancelled in 2020. The Bahamas, Birmingham, Celebration, Fenway, Frisco, Guaranteed Rate, Hawai’i, Holiday, Independence, LA, Las Vegas, Military, Pinstripe, Quick Lane, Redbox, and Sun bowl games had already been cancelled.
